Meet artist Jill Yelland at Aspects of Kings Park this month

During a 20 year career spanning Europe and Australia, Jill has been a publisher, print-maker, business woman, designer, lecturer and author but for the past five years her focus has been on glass inspired by the Western Australian landscape.

"People are intrigued as to how the glass is made, with most assuming its blown because that's the technique they're familiar with. But mine is fused, slumped and kiln-cast glass," says Jill.

"The pieces range from little bowls just eight centimetres square to platters 90 centimetres long and 60 centimetres wide, and I will also have hanging glass which can be displayed against a wall."

This glass platter by Jill Yellard is titled 'Bunker Bay'.Jill has been involved in FORM's Designing Futures initiative, which fosters a culture of innovation and sustainability in the Western Australian craft industry, since its commencement in 2002.

Through her company Design Mergers she creates artworks for corporate gifts and trophies. Jill has had many high profile clients including BHP Billiton, Woodside Energy and the Water Corporation.

She has been commissioned to produce art glass for various large events such as the Alzheimer's Conference and an International IT Conference in India. The Premier gave Jill's work to Hu Jintao, the President of China, and also took some of her pieces as gifts on a trade mission to India last year.

All Jill's commercial pieces are named after places in Western Australia such as Pilbara, Ningaloo and Bunker Bay. She has observed that buyers in different parts of the State have distinct colour preferences, with red and black being popular in the north while blues and aquamarine or a sophisticated combination of black and silver are the winners in the south-west.

A range of Jill's work is available to purchase at Aspects of Kings Park.
