Lucy Bromell is one of Western Australia's most successful textile artists. Having studied Theatre Arts and Costume Design, Lucy went on to specialise in textiles by completing a B.A. in Visual Arts (Textiles) at the School of Contemporary Art, Edith Cowan University in Western Australia. There she continued as a sessional lecturer and technician until 1997.

Textiles by artist Lucy BromellWith an expertise in textile techniques, Lucy founded Bromelli, a small business printing textiles, whilst continuing to develop artistic pieces which have been exhibited around the world.

Her fascination with unusual techniques has lead to the creation of uniquely sensuous and luxurious scarves and wraps. Her passion is the exploration of methods that chemically or physically change the structure of fabric; known in the industry as the printing of ‘special styles', these techniques are labour intensive and highly specialised. The techniques she uses most are devore, fulling resist and silk degumming.

Inspired by the colours and textures of the Australian landscape, particularly Western Australian flora, she generally prefers to work with natural fibres such as silk and Australian wool.

Lucy has revived the French devorè (or ‘burn out') technique of the 30s for her scarves. This etches the design into the fabric of the scarf. The scarves are individually printed and dyed making each one a unique interpretation of Western Australia's beautiful flora.
